Warm Greetings from HSC

We are thrilled to continue keeping you up to date with all of the exciting events happening at Hillfield Strathallan College. If you are looking for a glimpse into life at HSC, these stories will be perfect for you.

An Autumn Spent Outdoors

Between the three-year-olds and the Grade 12 students, the entire HSC community has been making the most of the warm autumn weather outdoors. HSC is a strong believer in the benefits of exploring and taking controlled risks in safe, outdoor environments. Outdoor education delivers curriculum in a meaningful and exciting manner that inspires personal growth, resiliency collaboration, and leadership.

Montessori CASA students (three- to five-year-olds) harvested their own vegetable garden, which produced a crop of herbs, potatoes, carrots and beets.

In the Junior School’s new “Bio Blitz” project, students are investigating local green spaces for invertebrates and other wildlife. They are sharing their discoveries on an app called iNaturalist, capitalizing on the benefits of social media and technology to respond to students’ environmental inquiries.

Students in the Middle and Senior Schools had the opportunity to participate in Fall “E-Week” trips, which took them to various camps, where they enjoyed nature at its finest and had the chance to bond with their new, and returning, classmates and teachers.

We cannot wait to show you how our students make the most of the winter weather!

Results from Two CAIS National Soccer Tournaments

Back in the first week of October, HSC had the privilege of hosting fellow CAIS schools from across Canada for the U15 Girls’ National Soccer tournament. HSC’s team made it to the semi-final round and had strong support from other HSC students, staff and parents who were spectators at the games on campus. Congratulations girls!

The U13 Boys’ Soccer Team travelled to Glenlyon Norfolk School in Victoria, British Columbia to compete in the CAIS National Soccer Tournament, giving them an awesome opportunity to see the west coast of Canada and play against soccer teams from all over the country.

Giving Back: The Best Way to Be Thankful at Thanksgiving

All four HSC schools celebrated Thanksgiving this year by giving back to the community. The students collected a record amount of nutritious donations for the Neighbour to Neighbour Food Bank!

Additionally, the Montessori and Junior Schools had a fun afternoon outdoors participating in the annual Turkey Trot in support of the Tim Horton Children’s Foundation.

Welcoming New Parents to the HSC Community

On October 12, we welcomed all parents who are new to the HSC community to have dinner on campus, giving them an opportunity to connect with HSC staff, faculty and other new families. While parents were mingling, their children were enjoying pizza and a movie night with HSC staff in the Montessori School, making it a fun evening for the entire family!

New Student Luncheon

Shortly after welcoming the new parents, the Senior School Ambassador Team hosted a luncheon for all of the new students in Grades 9 to 12. The goal of this lunch was to obtain feedback from the newest members of the community. What were their favourite parts of life in Senior School? What were some challenges they faced as a new student, and how could they overcome them? We’re committed to helping our new students feel at home at HSC!

HSC Students Participate in a France Exchange

The HSC Canada-France Exchange Program is celebrating its 25th year! There were 28 students enhancing the atmosphere at the College this October from Nantes, France (on the border of Brittany). The Grade 8 and 9 students began corresponding with each other a year before meeting in Hamilton. They had a once-in-a-lifetime experience of staying with the HSC families and participating in a wide variety of Canadian activities, in addition to attending classes.  HSC’s students, accompanied by four teachers, will travel to France in March. Merci pour 25 années incroyables!

Experience HSC at College-Wide Open Houses

The best way to experience all that our community has to offer is to join us at a College-Wide Open House! The next one will take place on Wednesday, November 1, 2017. We will open our campus from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and again from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tour the College, meet our dedicated faculty, and learn about our programming from Montessori Toddler and Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12. For more information, or to RSVP, please e-mail admissions@hsc.on.ca or call 1-905-389-1367.
